SPRING GREEN – The Rev. Everett Mitchell, who officiated a historic same-sex marriage in 2014 at Christ the Solid Rock Baptist Church, Madison, where he serves as pastor, will be guest speaker at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. observance beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 17, 2015, at Spring Green Elementary School.
“The Challenge of Radical Inclusion: Building the Beloved Community” will be Mitchell’s topic at the Spring Green event, which is free and open to the public. Beverages and birthday cake honoring Dr. King will be served. Free will donations will be accepted to cover costs of the annual observance.
In addition to his duties as pastor at Christ the Solid Rock Baptist Church, Mitchell works as the Director of Community Relations for the UW-Madison. He is a former assistant district attorney in Dane County, and served as associate director of the Madison-area Urban Ministry.
Mitchell graduated from Morehouse College, (Dr. Kings’ alma mater) in Atlanta, Georgia with degrees in mathematics and religion. Ordained at age 23, he went on to earn Masters Degrees in social ethics and Christian ethics at Princeton Theological Seminary, New Jersey. Mitchell’s theological focus has been examining the relationship of the church to social issues, such as poverty, war, incarceration and immigration. In 2010, he graduated with a law degree from UW-Madison. He is married to Mankah Mitchell and has two children, Sydney and Braylon.
The annual River Valley MLK observance will take place in the elementary school library, 830 W. Daley Street, Spring Green. It is hosted by an ad hoc group of River Valley residents. For more information contact David Giffey at 608-753-2199.
